Wild Yellow-Browed Warbler Welfare

Yellow-browed warblers are charming Siberian migrants increasingly occurring in the UK in autumn, dependent on coastal scrub for refuelling.

Key Facts

Yellow-browed warblers breed in Siberia and have been recorded in increasing numbers in UK autumns
They feed on invertebrates in coastal scrub during passage in September-October
Coastal scrub habitats at migration watch points provide essential stopover resources
Birdwatcher pressure at popular sites can cause repeated disturbance welfare costs
Climate change may be influencing the increasing pattern of autumn occurrence in northwest Europe

Welfare Considerations

Yellow-browed warbler welfare at UK stopover sites depends on undisturbed coastal scrub with abundant invertebrate prey for refuelling. Responsible birdwatching maintaining adequate distance allows birds to feed without energy-wasting flight from observers. These are tiny birds on long, demanding migrations requiring every available calorie.

What You Can Do

Maintain respectful distances when watching rare migrants at coastal sites
Support coastal scrub management providing migrant stopover habitat
Contribute to ringing and monitoring data tracking yellow-browed warbler occurrence
