Wildlife sanctuaries rehabilitating and rehoming rescued animals face welfare challenges in balancing animal needs with resource constraints and long-term care commitments.
Wildlife sanctuary welfare quality is extremely variable because the sector is large, under-regulated, and attracts both genuine welfare operators and facilities that exploit the sanctuary label commercially. Genuine sanctuaries prioritize species-appropriate housing, veterinary care, behavioral enrichment, and release preparation for releasable animals. The fundamental challenge is that rescue creates animal commitment — a bear or elephant accepted cannot later be turned away without welfare cost. Sanctuaries that accept more animals than their resources can support produce chronic substandard welfare for all residents. Accreditation through GFAS, PASA, and similar bodies is the most reliable indicator of genuine welfare capacity.
