Zoo animal transfer welfare is an underappreciated aspect of conservation breeding management. Conservation programs require genetic movement between zoos to prevent inbreeding, but transfers impose welfare costs on individual animals. Elephants that are separated from social groups for transfer to new facilities show behavioral changes lasting months, including stereotypy, reduced feeding, and social withdrawal. Smaller species also experience transfer stress. Welfare-conscious transfer protocols minimize transport time, provide familiar social companions during travel where possible, allow adequate quarantine space and enrichment, and manage introduction to new groups carefully. The welfare cost of transfers should be explicitly factored into conservation breeding decisions.
