Iron deficiency anaemia in pre-weaned piglets is a welfare concern in indoor production, requiring supplementation due to the absence of natural soil iron access.
Iron deficiency anaemia causes lethargy, pale mucous membranes, and immune suppression in affected piglets. It is entirely preventable through supplementation. The welfare cost of intramuscular injection is minor compared to the welfare benefit, but the development of effective oral alternatives is a welcome welfare refinement.
