Fieldfares wintering in the UK depend on berry-rich hedgerows and orchards, with welfare tied to berry abundance and weather severity.
Individual fieldfare welfare during UK winters depends on berry availability in hedgerows, particularly hawthorn and holly. Severe winters that deplete berry stocks before spring can cause starvation welfare crises for large flocks.
