Fish Welfare in Ornamental Aquarium Trade

Welfare concerns in the ornamental fish trade, from capture through transport to retail and home aquaria.

Key Facts

Over 1 billion ornamental fish are traded globally each year
Marine species are predominantly wild-caught with significant mortality during capture
Cyanide fishing causes suffering and coral reef damage
Transport mortality rates can be significant in poorly managed supply chains
Many owners lack knowledge of species-specific welfare requirements

Welfare Considerations

Ornamental fish experience serious welfare problems throughout the supply chain, and many suffer in inadequate home aquaria due to poor husbandry knowledge.

What You Can Do

Research species requirements thoroughly before purchasing aquarium fish
Choose captive-bred fish where available
Support certification schemes for responsibly sourced ornamental fish
