UK Yellow Wagtail Conservation and Decline

Conservation of the yellow wagtail, a rapidly declining summer migrant bird in UK farmland.

Key Facts

Yellow wagtail populations have declined by over 70% in England since the 1970s
They are closely associated with cattle and sheep pasture for foraging
Nest failure due to agricultural operations is a primary cause of decline
African wintering grounds are increasingly threatened by habitat change
Farmland management under agri-environment schemes can support yellow wagtails

Welfare Considerations

Individual yellow wagtails face welfare risks from nest destruction, pesticide effects on invertebrate prey, and long-distance migration challenges.

What You Can Do

Support agri-environment measures that benefit yellow wagtails
Report yellow wagtail sightings to county bird clubs
Advocate for farmland bird conservation in agricultural policy
