Farmed Salmon Crowding Stress and Welfare

The welfare impacts of crowding stress in farmed salmon during routine management procedures.

Key Facts

Crowding occurs during treatment, grading, and harvest operations
Acute crowding causes physiological stress and can cause mortality in compromised fish
Welfare protocols for crowding specify maximum density and duration limits
Camera monitoring during crowding enables real-time welfare assessment
Pre-operational health assessment reduces risk during crowding procedures

Welfare Considerations

Crowding stress is an unavoidable part of salmon farming but its welfare impacts can be significantly reduced through careful planning and welfare-focused operational protocols.

What You Can Do

Advocate for crowding welfare protocols in salmon aquaculture standards
Support development of monitoring tools for crowding welfare assessment
Choose salmon from farms with published welfare protocols for handling operations
