UK Willow Tit Conservation and Wetland Scrub

Conservation of the willow tit, one of the UK's fastest-declining resident birds, and its habitat requirements.

Key Facts

Willow tit populations have declined by 94% since the 1970s
They excavate nest holes in soft rotting wood - unlike other tits that use existing holes
Wet woodland with alder and willow scrub is essential habitat
Competition from other tit species may be a contributing factor to decline
Very few conservation projects specifically target willow tit habitat needs

Welfare Considerations

Willow tits face extreme population pressure, and individual welfare is closely tied to availability of soft rotting wood for nest excavation and wet woodland habitat.

What You Can Do

Support willow tit conservation projects through the RSPB and Wildlife Trusts
Advocate for wet woodland creation and management in conservation planning
Leave rotting wood and stumps in woodland to support nesting willow tits
