UK Spotted Flycatcher Decline and Garden Habitat

Conservation of the spotted flycatcher, a declining summer migrant bird increasingly reliant on garden habitats.

Key Facts

Spotted flycatcher populations have declined by over 85% since the 1970s
They breed in gardens, parks, and woodland edges with open foraging areas
African wintering habitat and migration route threats contribute to decline
Open-fronted nest boxes support spotted flycatcher breeding in gardens
Flying insects are essential prey - insect decline may limit breeding success

Welfare Considerations

Individual spotted flycatchers face welfare pressures from insect prey scarcity and long-distance migration, with habitat management in gardens delivering direct benefits.

What You Can Do

Install open-fronted nest boxes in a suitable garden location
Reduce pesticide use to support flying insect populations
Plant insect-rich flowering plants to attract prey for spotted flycatchers
