UK Common Sandpiper Welfare and Upland Rivers

Conservation of common sandpipers in UK upland river habitats and threats to their breeding populations.

Key Facts

Common sandpipers breed along fast-flowing upland rivers with shingle banks
UK population declined by over 20% between 1995 and 2017
They winter in West Africa, undertaking long migrations twice yearly
Nest sites are sensitive to flooding and disturbance from recreational activity
BTO Bird Atlas data shows continued range contraction in England and Wales

Welfare Considerations

Individual common sandpipers face welfare pressures from flooding of nest sites, predation, and long migration challenges, with habitat protection delivering welfare benefits.

What You Can Do

Support upland river conservation through the RSPB and Wildlife Trusts
Avoid disturbing river shingle banks during breeding season
Advocate for sustainable flood management that considers ground-nesting bird habitats
