UK Dartford Warbler Conservation and Heathland

Conservation of Dartford warblers in UK lowland heathland, one of Britain's most specialised resident birds.

Key Facts

Dartford warblers are resident in the UK year-round, unlike most warblers
They are confined to lowland heathland with mature gorse for nesting and roosting
UK population suffered catastrophic crashes during cold winters in the 1960s
Population has expanded since the 1960s with heathland restoration and warming climate
Dartford warblers are a flagship species for heathland conservation programmes

Welfare Considerations

Individual Dartford warblers face extreme welfare vulnerability during cold winters when their insect prey becomes unavailable, making mild winters critical for survival.
