UK Redstart and Pied Flycatcher Woodland Welfare

Conservation of redstarts and pied flycatchers in UK oak woodland and their welfare needs.

Key Facts

Pied flycatchers are closely associated with upland oak woodland in Wales and northern England
Redstarts breed in open woodland, parkland, and rocky upland habitats
Both species are long-distance migrants wintering in West Africa
Nest box provision dramatically increases breeding density of pied flycatchers
BTO Nest Record Scheme data shows productivity trends for both species

Welfare Considerations

Individual redstarts and pied flycatchers face welfare pressures from habitat loss and long migration challenges, with nest box provision delivering direct breeding welfare benefits.

What You Can Do

Install nest boxes in suitable upland or oak woodland habitats
Support RSPB and Wildlife Trust woodland conservation programmes
Record redstart and pied flycatcher sightings to assist population monitoring
