UK Great Grey Shrike and Rare Winter Visitors

Winter welfare and conservation of great grey shrikes and other rare winter visitors to UK habitats.

Key Facts

Great grey shrikes are rare winter visitors to UK heathland and open woodland
They are known as butcher birds for their habit of impaling prey on thorns
UK wintering numbers are small and birds attract birdwatcher attention
Open heathland and rough grassland with scattered trees is preferred habitat
Individual birds often winter at the same site for multiple years

Welfare Considerations

Great grey shrikes face welfare challenges during long-distance migration and winter food scarcity, requiring habitat protection at key UK wintering sites.
