UK Brown Hairstreak Butterfly and Hedgerow Conservation

Conservation of the brown hairstreak butterfly in UK hedgerow habitats and its management requirements.

Key Facts

Brown hairstreaks breed in hedgerows containing blackthorn as the larval food plant
Eggs are laid on young blackthorn growth and overwinter on stems
UK distribution is concentrated in southwest England and the Welsh borders
Annual hedge flailing destroys overwintering eggs causing significant population losses
Rotational hedge management leaving some growth avoids egg destruction

Welfare Considerations

Individual brown hairstreak eggs are extremely vulnerable to hedge flailing, with timing and frequency of hedge cutting directly determining larval survival.

What You Can Do

Advocate for rotational hedge cutting rather than annual flailing
Support Butterfly Conservation brown hairstreak monitoring in southwest England
Leave blackthorn hedges uncut in winter to protect hairstreak eggs
