UK Hedgehog Conservation and Garden Safety

Supporting hedgehog welfare and conservation in UK gardens and suburban habitats.

Key Facts

UK hedgehog populations declined by over 50% in rural areas between 1995 and 2015
Urban and suburban populations have been more stable than rural counterparts
Hedgehog highways through garden boundaries enable movement and foraging
Slug pellets and pesticides kill invertebrates hedgehogs depend on for food
Bonfires should be checked for hibernating hedgehogs before lighting

Welfare Considerations

Individual hedgehogs face welfare risks from garden hazards including netting, ponds without exits, and bonfires, with simple management changes delivering direct welfare benefits.

What You Can Do

Create a 13cm gap in garden boundaries for hedgehog movement
Check bonfires carefully before lighting - build fresh on the day
Remove garden netting at ground level and provide pond exit ramps
