UK Cuckoo Decline and Parasite Host Relationships

The decline of cuckoos in the UK and welfare implications of their brood parasitism strategy.

Key Facts

UK cuckoo populations declined by 65% between 1995 and 2020
Decline is linked to changes in host availability and food on African migration routes
Reed warblers, dunnocks, and meadow pipits are primary UK hosts
Young cuckoos eject host eggs and monopolise parental care
Satellite tracking reveals cuckoo migration routes and survival challenges

Welfare Considerations

Individual cuckoos face welfare challenges from long migration and food availability, while host species experience welfare costs from rearing cuckoo chicks that displace their own offspring.

What You Can Do

Support BTO cuckoo tracking projects to understand migration welfare challenges
Advocate for farmland bird conservation that benefits cuckoo hosts
Record cuckoo calls in spring to assist population monitoring
