Companion Cat Interactive Play and Welfare

The importance of interactive play for companion cat welfare and preventing behaviour problems.

Key Facts

Interactive play satisfies predatory sequence needs in indoor cats
Wand toys that mimic prey movement are most effective for cat play
At least two daily play sessions of 10-15 minutes benefit indoor cat welfare
Play reduces stress, obesity risk, and aggression in companion cats
Insufficient play opportunity is linked to overgrooming, redirected aggression, and boredom

Welfare Considerations

Interactive play is a fundamental welfare need for companion cats that enables expression of natural predatory behaviour and prevents the chronic welfare deficit of boredom.

What You Can Do

Schedule at least two daily interactive play sessions for your cat
Use wand toys that mimic prey movement rather than hands or feet
End play sessions gradually to allow natural predatory sequence completion
