UK Great Spotted Woodpecker and Woodland Welfare

Conservation of great spotted woodpeckers in UK woodland and their role in ecosystem welfare.

Key Facts

Great spotted woodpeckers are the most common and widespread UK woodpecker
They excavate nest holes used subsequently by owls, tits, bats, and other species
UK populations have expanded significantly in recent decades into suburban habitats
Peanut and suet feeders attract great spotted woodpeckers to gardens
They prey on nestlings of other hole-nesting species which raises welfare considerations

Welfare Considerations

Great spotted woodpeckers provide ecological services through nest hole excavation while predating nestlings of other species, illustrating the complexity of individual welfare versus ecosystem function.

What You Can Do

Provide peanut and suet feeders to attract great spotted woodpeckers to gardens
Support woodland conservation with mature trees for woodpecker nesting
