UK Common Sandpiper Breeding Ecology

Breeding ecology and welfare of common sandpipers in UK upland river habitats.

Key Facts

Both parents share incubation and chick rearing in common sandpipers
Nests are built in vegetation close to fast-flowing rivers with shingle banks
Chicks are precocial and can run and hide within hours of hatching
Breeding season runs from May to July with single clutch of four eggs
Young birds migrate to Africa independently of adults in their first autumn

Welfare Considerations

Common sandpiper chicks face welfare risks from flooding and predation, with shingle bank habitat protection and sensitive riparian management supporting breeding welfare.

What You Can Do

Avoid disturbing river shingle banks during breeding season in upland areas
Support RSPB and Wildlife Trust upland river conservation programmes
Record common sandpiper breeding sightings to assist BTO population monitoring
