UK Avocet and Stilt Wetland Breeding Welfare

Breeding welfare of avocets and black-winged stilts in UK wetland habitats.

Key Facts

Avocets are aggressive defenders of nesting territories, mobbing potential predators
Both avocet and stilt chicks are precocial and mobile within hours of hatching
Nest sites are typically on islands or spits in shallow lagoons providing natural predator exclusion
Flooding events can destroy entire colony productivity in a single tidal event
Wetland management including water level control is critical for successful breeding

Welfare Considerations

Avocet and stilt chick welfare depends on water level management and predator exclusion at nesting sites, with active habitat management delivering direct breeding welfare benefits.
