IMTP causes the immune system to destroy platelets, causing uncontrolled bleeding
Signs include bruising, petechiae, and spontaneous haemorrhage from mucous membranes
Immunosuppressive therapy with prednisolone and azathioprine is standard treatment
Blood or platelet transfusions may be life-saving in severe cases
Prognosis is generally good with treatment but relapse occurs in some dogs

Welfare Considerations

IMTP causes acute welfare crisis through bleeding and bruising, and rapid immunosuppressive treatment significantly reduces suffering duration and mortality.

Seek emergency veterinary care for dogs with unexplained bruising or bleeding
Know that platelet transfusion may be lifesaving for severely affected dogs
