UK Hobby Breeding Ecology and Chick Welfare

Breeding ecology of hobbies in UK heathland and farmland and welfare of chicks in the nest.

Key Facts

Hobbies often take over old corvid nests rather than building their own
Both parents share incubation and chick provisioning duties
Chicks fledge after about 28-32 days and remain dependent on parents for several weeks
UK hobby population has expanded northward as climate has warmed
Hobby nests on heathland require protection from human disturbance

Welfare Considerations

Hobby chicks depend on abundant aerial prey provisioned by both parents, with nest protection from disturbance and habitat management for prey supporting chick welfare.

What You Can Do

Avoid approaching hobby nesting areas on heathland during breeding season
Support heathland conservation that provides hobby breeding habitat
Record hobby nesting to assist population monitoring
