UK Spoonbill Breeding and Colony Welfare

Breeding welfare of spoonbills in UK colonies and management to support growing population.

Key Facts

Spoonbills nest colonially in trees or reedbeds with nearby shallow feeding areas
Both parents share incubation and chick feeding using their distinctive spatulate bills
UK breeding colonies are still small and vulnerable to single events like storms
Young spoonbills are recognisable by their black wingtips before full adult plumage
UK spoonbill monitoring is coordinated by BTO and local ornithologists

Welfare Considerations

Spoonbill chick welfare depends on colony protection from disturbance and productive shallow water feeding habitat nearby, with colony management delivering direct welfare benefits.
