Farmed Salmon Welfare and Certification Standards

Current salmon welfare certification standards and what they deliver for fish welfare.

Key Facts

RSPCA Assured and Aquaculture Stewardship Council are leading salmon welfare certifiers
Certification covers stocking density, handling, treatment, and slaughter welfare
Third-party auditing provides independent verification of certification claims
Consumer awareness of salmon welfare certification is lower than for other animal products
Certification market share is growing but still represents a minority of salmon production

Welfare Considerations

Certification standards represent the best available welfare protection for farmed salmon, and consumer demand for certified salmon drives adoption across the industry.
