UK Marsh Warbler Song and Conservation

Conservation and welfare of marsh warblers, renowned for their extraordinary vocal mimicry.

Key Facts

Male marsh warblers incorporate calls of over 200 bird species in their songs
Songs include calls learned from African birds encountered during migration
UK breeding population is fewer than 10 pairs and highly vulnerable
Males arrive in late May and produce continuous song throughout the breeding season
Damp nettle and willow scrub habitats are essential breeding sites

Welfare Considerations

Individual marsh warblers face welfare pressures from habitat loss at UK breeding sites and long migration challenges, with site protection delivering direct breeding welfare benefits.
