UK Dartford Warbler Winter Welfare Crisis

Winter welfare challenges for Dartford warblers during cold spells and conservation responses.

Key Facts

Dartford warblers have no migration strategy and must survive UK winters in situ
Cold snowy winters can kill 90% or more of populations in affected areas
Southern heathlands in Dorset and Surrey protect the core breeding population
Supplementary feeding during extreme cold events is provided at some key sites
Climate warming has enabled population expansion but cold snaps remain a welfare risk

Welfare Considerations

Individual Dartford warblers face acute welfare crisis during cold winters when invertebrate prey becomes inaccessible under snow, making mild winters essential for population survival.
