UK Ring-Necked Parakeet Welfare and Urban Ecology

Welfare and ecological implications of ring-necked parakeets in UK urban and suburban areas.

Key Facts

Ring-necked parakeets have established a substantial feral population in London and south-east England
They compete with native cavity-nesting birds including owls and woodpeckers
Parakeet population management raises significant welfare concerns about control methods
Individual parakeets show complex social behaviour and significant cognitive abilities
UK parakeet population is estimated at over 50,000 birds

Welfare Considerations

Ring-necked parakeets have complex welfare needs as intelligent, social birds, and any population management must consider the welfare costs to individual birds alongside ecological concerns.

What You Can Do

Avoid feeding parakeets in areas where they may displace native cavity nesters
Engage thoughtfully with the complex welfare and ecological debate around parakeet management
Record parakeet distribution to assist population monitoring
