Abalone occupy a curious position in welfare science — they are molluscs, yet display behavioral responses to noxious stimuli that suggest pain processing. Whether they experience suffering in any morally relevant sense remains debated, but the precautionary principle applies. Welfare improvements — appropriate stocking density, optimal water quality, minimized handling — are achievable at low cost and serve production goals as well as ethical ones. Including abalone in aquaculture welfare frameworks would represent meaningful precautionary progress.
