Farmed Pig Welfare and Water Quality

The importance of clean water access for pig welfare and common water quality problems on farms.

Key Facts

Water is the most important nutrient for pigs and restriction causes significant welfare cost
Flow rate, temperature, and cleanliness all affect water consumption
Biofilm in drinker systems reduces water quality and encourages bacterial growth
Individual pig water consumption monitoring is possible with smart drinker technology
Water quality problems are frequently underdiagnosed as a welfare issue on pig farms

Welfare Considerations

Inadequate water access causes rapid welfare deterioration in pigs, and routine monitoring of water quality and consumption is an essential welfare management practice.

What You Can Do

Support water quality monitoring as a welfare standard requirement
Advocate for minimum water access standards in pig welfare legislation
Encourage farmers to audit drinker systems as a welfare priority
