UK Grey Plover Winter Estuary Welfare

Winter welfare of grey plovers in UK estuaries and their dependence on productive mudflat habitats.

Key Facts

Grey plovers breed in Siberian tundra and winter on UK estuaries
They have distinctive black axillary feathers visible in flight
Grey plovers are sensitive to estuary disturbance especially at high tide roosts
UK hosts internationally important numbers of wintering grey plovers
Polychaete worms are primary prey items on estuarine mudflats

Welfare Considerations

Individual grey plovers depend on productive estuarine mudflats and undisturbed roost sites in winter, with estuary conservation delivering direct welfare benefits.

What You Can Do

Support estuarine conservation through the RSPB and Wildlife Trusts
Respect wader roost sites by maintaining distance during high tide
Advocate for estuarine site protection from development and disturbance
