The irony is that the very cognitive complexity that makes octopuses scientifically interesting — their problem-solving, play behavior, individual personalities — is the same complexity that makes their welfare in barren research tanks a serious concern. Welfare standards for cephalopods in research facilities should reflect what we know about their cognitive sophistication, not what we know about fish.
