Mussel farming is widely considered low-impact, but welfare questions about bivalve sentience and the welfare implications of intensive farming practices deserve consideration.
Mussel welfare sits at the extreme edge of welfare science uncertainty. Whether mussels experience anything like subjective suffering is genuinely unknown, and the precautionary case for welfare consideration is weaker here than for fish or crustaceans. However, the physical trauma of dredge harvesting, mortality from emersion during transport, and the killing of non-target organisms during farming and harvest all represent welfare costs worth acknowledging. Environmental sustainability credentials do not automatically resolve the welfare question.
