Welfare of Wild Animals Affected by Agricultural Pesticide Drift

Pesticide spray drift beyond target areas harms amphibians, insects, birds, and small mammals in adjacent habitats through acute toxicity and chronic sublethal exposure.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Pesticide drift is an invisible welfare harm that spreads beyond farm boundaries into the habitats where wild animals live. Frogs in ponds downwind of sprayed fields absorb pesticides through their permeable skin. Bees foraging on field margin flowers collect contaminated pollen. Birds eat pesticide-exposed invertebrates. Each of these exposure pathways causes suffering — from acute toxicity deaths to the chronic developmental disruption of sublethal exposure. Buffer zones, reduced application rates, and IPM approaches all reduce this diffuse but enormous welfare impact.
