CRISPR and other gene editing technologies are increasingly used to create animal models for disease research, with welfare implications for edited animals and their offspring.
Gene editing technologies have dramatically accelerated the creation of animal disease models, and with them, the welfare burden on individual animals. Animals edited to develop painful conditions, to lack immune function, or to carry progressive neurological diseases experience real suffering in service of research goals. The power and precision of gene editing makes this welfare cost easier to justify for genuinely important questions — but also easier to underestimate for incremental ones. Rigorous ethical review that weighs welfare costs against research value is essential.
