Zebrafish and other small fish are widely used in neuroscience research under welfare frameworks that may underestimate their sentience and pain capacity.
Zebrafish are sometimes treated in research contexts as if their small size and aquatic lifestyle made them welfare-negligible. The evidence does not support this view. Zebrafish have pain processing systems, stress responses, and behavioral indicators of distress that parallel mammalian responses. Their welfare in research settings deserves the same 3Rs scrutiny applied to rats and mice. The rapid growth in zebrafish research use creates urgency for welfare standard development that keeps pace with the science.
