Tilapia is the third most farmed fish species globally, raised in intensive pond and tank systems across tropical and subtropical regions with variable welfare standards.
Tilapia welfare receives less attention than salmon because the species is often framed as robust and tolerant. However, tolerance of poor conditions does not mean insensitivity to those conditions. Overcrowding, poor water quality, aggressive interactions, and stressful harvesting are welfare challenges in tilapia farming as in any fish species. The scale of production, concentrated in countries with limited welfare regulation, means that billions of individual fish experience largely unmitigated welfare costs annually. Improved stocking density standards, water quality monitoring, and humane slaughter requirements would all address genuine suffering.
