Bechstein Bat: Ancient Woodland Specialist

Bechsteins bat is one of Europes rarest bats in Britain restricted to ancient woodland with abundant tree cavities.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Bechsteins bats face extreme welfare vulnerability from loss of ancient woodland and veteran trees with natural cavities. Tree felling eliminates roosting habitat for this cavity-dependent species. Woodland management that removes standing dead wood and veteran trees is particularly damaging. Bat box provision is less suitable as Bechsteins bats prefer natural cavities. Disturbance during hibernation in hollow trees can cause fatal energy expenditure.
