Common Toad as Garden Ally: Understanding Welfare Needs

Welfare Considerations

Common toads face welfare challenges from garden pond loss, road mortality during migration, and pesticide exposure. Slug pellets containing metaldehyde and ferric phosphate can harm toads directly or by eliminating prey. Toads sheltering in bonfires or under garden machinery can be killed when these are activated. Strimming in late summer damages toads sheltering in long grass.

Create a toad-friendly garden with a pond, rough grass areas, and leaf pile shelters
Never use metaldehyde slug pellets which can harm toads
Check bonfires and under machinery before use especially in autumn
Support local toad patrol groups by volunteering during spring migration
