Growing evidence suggests some invertebrates may experience pain and distress, challenging assumptions about which animals need welfare protection.
The exclusion of invertebrates from welfare protection has been based on assumption rather than evidence. As research reveals nociception and pain-like behaviour in more invertebrate groups, the ethical framework for their treatment requires updating. Invertebrates are used in enormous numbers in research, food production, and pest control with essentially no welfare consideration. The precautionary principle suggests erring on the side of protection.
