Welfare Considerations

High-grain diets cause chronic subacute ruminal acidosis which is painful and reduces immunity. Liver abscesses develop in 10 to 30 percent of feedlot cattle depending on diet. Respiratory disease from stress and crowding causes significant morbidity. Extreme summer heat in some regions causes heat stress with inadequate shade provision.
