Pig Enrichment: Legal Requirements and Welfare Reality

Welfare Considerations

Pigs have a strong intrinsic drive to root, forage, and investigate their environment. When confined without adequate substrate this drive is redirected into tail and flank biting which can escalate to cannibalism. The provision of chains or rubber objects required by many producers does not satisfy this behavioural need. Tail docking is widely practiced to reduce biting injury but does not address the underlying welfare problem of insufficient enrichment.

Engage with retailers to source pork only from farms meeting enrichment standards
Advocate for stronger enforcement of enrichment regulations with meaningful penalties
