Switching from dairy to plant-based alternatives significantly reduces animal welfare impacts but alternatives vary in their own environmental and ethical footprints.
Dairy production involves significant animal welfare costs including calf separation, mastitis, lameness, and premature culling of cows. Plant-based alternatives eliminate these direct welfare impacts. However, agricultural production of plant milks affects wildlife through land use, pesticide application, and habitat modification. Oat milk produced in the UK has the lowest combined welfare and environmental impact per litre. The welfare comparison strongly favours plant-based alternatives even accounting for indirect impacts.
