Eurasian lynx became extinct in Britain around 700 years ago and proposals to reintroduce them raise important welfare considerations.
Lynx reintroduction welfare considerations include the stress of capture and translocation, the challenge of establishing territories in unfamiliar terrain, and the risk of human-caused mortality including road collisions and illegal killing. Released animals must find prey in areas where roe deer are their primary target. Livestock predation incidents require rapid compensation and non-lethal deterrent implementation to prevent persecution. The welfare of individual release animals must be monitored through the establishment phase.
