Parrots are among the most cognitively complex pets kept by humans, yet their needs are systematically underestimated. A parrot that spends its day alone in a small cage cannot exercise, socialize, forage or use its intelligence — all activities that are essential to its well-being. Behavioral problems like feather plucking and screaming are signals of psychological distress, not character flaws. Many parrots outlive their owners, creating welfare and rehoming crises. Better education before purchase and higher minimum housing standards could prevent much preventable parrot suffering.
