Intensive animal agriculture creates conditions that amplify zoonotic disease risk while simultaneously causing significant animal welfare problems, creating interconnected public health and welfare concerns.
The connection between animal welfare and zoonotic disease risk is direct and significant. Densely housed, stressed animals with compromised immune systems are ideal incubators for novel pathogens. The same conditions that cause animal suffering — overcrowding, poor ventilation, limited space — also create disease amplification environments. Reforming animal agriculture toward higher welfare standards is therefore simultaneously a human health intervention. One Health approaches increasingly recognize this connection.
