Feral pigeons are among the most abundant urban wildlife yet receive little welfare consideration, facing disease, injury, and often inhumane population control methods.
Feral pigeons are intelligent social birds whose presence in cities reflects human behavior — they thrive on our food waste and discarded grains. Yet they are treated as pests and subjected to culling, trapping, and lethal control methods that are both inhumane and ineffective. The scientific evidence strongly supports that fertility control through contraceptive grain, combined with reduced food availability, is the only approach that sustainably reduces pigeon populations while avoiding the suffering caused by lethal methods. Pigeons deserve welfare consideration as sentient birds regardless of their urban nuisance status.
