Welfare Considerations

Aquarium fish welfare is almost entirely invisible in public discourse and regulation. These animals are protected by almost no meaningful welfare legislation, yet they are sentient beings capable of pain, stress and psychological suffering. The ornamental fish trade involves enormous suffering from wild capture, transport stress, and placement in tanks that bear no resemblance to natural environments. Even well-intentioned fish keeping frequently fails to meet fish needs — most common pet fish require far larger, more complex environments than they receive. Education, industry standards and minimum tank size requirements could prevent significant suffering.

Choose captive-bred fish over wild-caught, especially for marine species
