The male dairy calf problem is one of the most uncomfortable welfare issues in the dairy sector. Approximately half of all dairy calves born are male, cannot produce milk, and are typically killed within days of birth as economically worthless. This practice, which involves shooting or CO2 gassing of healthy neonates, is difficult to defend from a welfare perspective. Rose veal — UK-produced veal from calves given outdoor access, group housing and adequate space — provides a market for these animals that allows them to live several months before slaughter, which many consider more welfare-positive than immediate killing. The fundamental problem remains the dairy cycle itself.
