Honeybee welfare operates at colony and individual levels. Individual bees experience pain-like responses to harmful stimuli and show behavioral markers of negative emotional states. At colony level, varroa infestations and pesticide exposure cause population decline, behavioral disruption and immune suppression across thousands of individuals simultaneously. Beekeeping practices significantly affect colony welfare — regular hive inspections, treatment for varroa, limiting commercial transportation, and providing good foraging habitat all contribute to colony wellbeing. The question of whether to extend individual welfare considerations to social insect colonies remains scientifically open but the case for precautionary protection is strong.
